The arrival of summer brings plenty of opportunities to get out and experience the best of our community. This month, we're highlighting a few destinations that inspire creativity, learning, and connection right here along the Gulf Coast.

A Creative Afternoon at the Mobile Museum of Art

One of the true gems of our community is the Mobile Museum of Art. A recent visit revealed an impressive collection of artists whose work invites visitors to see the world from new perspectives.

The exhibit featuring Aminah Robinson (1940-2015) showcases her distinctive multimedia artwork, blending textures, materials, and storytelling into pieces that are both visually stunning and deeply meaningful. She used traditional and non-traditional materials to create a vast body of interesting art. Her pieces reflect her personal spiritual journey as well as her extensive worldwide travels. This playful and interesting exhibit will delight art enthusiasts of all ages.

This exhibit will be on display until January 9, 2027.

Louise Nevelson: Dawn to Dusk
Louise Nevelson: Dawn to Dusk

Another standout is the work of Louise Nevelson. Dawn to Dusk explores her emergence as a sculptor of international fame. The exhibit features 40 works from the Farnsworth Art Museum collection and includes early paintings, sculptures, jewelry, collages and painted wood reliefs.

She was born in Tsarist Russia in 1899 and immigrated to Rockland Maine with her family in 1905 to escape jewish persecution. She was determined to pursue her calling as an artist and despite personal and cultural challenges, she found recognition for her work.

There are opportunities available for the public to interact with her artisitc perspective. She was know for the use of black as the ultimate color.

Using found objects, she created interesting collages that are on display in Mobile.

The last day to view is July 31, 2026 and I am truly grateful to MMOA for bringing this exhibit to the Coast. Remember residents can visit the museum every Thursday for free.

Fashion enthusiasts will also appreciate the remarkable collection of handcrafted hats created by local milliner Susie Mae Pugh-Williams. The craftsmanship, detail, and artistry on display offer a fascinating glimpse into hats or "crowns" in the African American communities. Mrs. Pugh-Williams (1949-2020) was born and raised in Mobile, Alabama. She taught herself the art of millinery and created hats, wraps, fasicnators and other headwear for herself, friends and clients. There are over two dozen hats on display through August 15, 2026 for you to enjoy. The craftsmanship is incredible.

Free Family Fun at the Maker's Market – June 6

If you've never visited the museum, June 6 offers the perfect opportunity. The annual Maker's Market features FREE admission, local artisans, live music, food trucks, and the chance to support creative entrepreneurs from across our region.

Whether you're shopping for unique gifts, enjoying great food, or simply exploring the museum galleries, it's a wonderful way to spend a day while supporting the local creative community.

Grow, Learn & Shop Local at the Mobile Botanical Gardens

If you're looking for another unique community event this June, be sure to visit the Farmer's Market hosted by the Mobile Botanical Gardens on June 13.

The day begins with an educational workshop from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM designed for gardeners, aspiring growers, and anyone interested in local agriculture. Topics include food safety, equipment use, soil health, marketing strategies, and other valuable insights for those looking to grow their knowledge along with their gardens.

Vendor booths will be open from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, offering visitors the opportunity to shop from local growers, makers, and artisans while supporting small businesses throughout our community. Food trucks will also be on-site from noon until 4:00 PM, making it easy to spend the afternoon enjoying great food, beautiful surroundings, and the company of fellow community members.

Whether you have a green thumb or simply enjoy shopping local and learning something new, this event offers a wonderful opportunity to connect with others while supporting the people who help our local economy thrive.

Shout out to Kim's Nursery in Wilmer. We ventured out to her place in May and were delighted with the healthy plants, huge variety, plant knowledge and prices. Definitely worth the trip!

Set Sail for Adventure at the National Maritime Museum

Families looking for an interactive summer experience should add the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico to their list. It offers some spectacular views!

From May 15 through August 31, admission is just $5, making it one of the best entertainment values on the Gulf Coast. Visitors can explore hands-on exhibits that celebrate our maritime heritage, learn about ships and navigation, and enjoy interactive experiences designed for both children and adults.

It's the kind of attraction where learning feels like play, making it an ideal summer destination for families, grandparents, and curious minds of all ages.

Worth the Drive: Local Dining Destinations

Exploring our community isn't just about attractions and events—it's also about discovering great places to enjoy a meal with family and friends.

One recent highlight was Dauphin's Casual Fine Dining, Mobile's premier casual fine dining destination located on the 34th floor of the Trustmark Building. The panoramic views of downtown Mobile, Mobile Bay, and the surrounding area are simply breathtaking. Whether you're stopping in for a weekday lunch, enjoying their popular Sunday Jazz Brunch, or planning a special evening out, Dauphin's delivers an experience that is difficult to match anywhere else in the city. The menu offers something for every taste, and during our visit, the food was every bit as impressive as the view.

First Watch

For breakfast and lunch lovers, First Watch on Schillinger Road in West Mobile is worth adding to your list. From the moment we arrived, the service was attentive and welcoming. The portions were generous enough that half of my breakfast came home with me, and the quality of the food exceeded expectations. Coffee enthusiasts will especially appreciate that each table receives its own pot of coffee, making it easy to relax and enjoy the meal without waiting for refills. It's a great spot for a casual breakfast meeting or weekend brunch with friends.

This restaurant is a welcome addition to the growing West Mobile area. It tends to be busy on the weekends however there is a wait list you can access online allowing you to go to the front of the line once you check in.

Another favorite that continues to impress is 7 Spice Mediterranean. Tucked away in the back of a local grocery store, this hidden gem serves authentic Mediterranean cuisine that keeps customers coming back. From flavorful gyros and perfectly seasoned kabobs to fresh sides and traditional specialties, every meal feels homemade. One recommendation is non-negotiable—order the lentil soup. It's the perfect way to start your meal and one of the best we've found anywhere in the area. It is located on Airport Blvd. next to Jason's Deli.

Boss Partner Spotlight: Redbar Espresso & Market

If you're searching for exceptional coffee, Redbar Espresso & Market should be at the top of your list. Owner Dr. Mike Bucknell has taken his passion for great coffee to the next level by roasting beans in-house, ensuring every cup is fresh, flavorful, and crafted with care. The result is what many locals consider the best coffee experience in West Mobile.

Redbar is much more than a coffee destination. Guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner from a menu filled with fresh, satisfying options, along with a full bar featuring a variety of adult beverages. Whether you're meeting friends, working remotely, or simply looking for a relaxing place to unwind, it offers a welcoming atmosphere that keeps customers coming back.

One of our favorite features is the outdoor patio seating, perfect for enjoying a cup of coffee on a cool morning or gathering with friends on a pleasant evening. It has become our go-to destination for exceptional coffee and a healthy breakfast, and it's easy to see why Redbar has become a favorite gathering place within our community.

One of the joys of living on the Gulf Coast is the variety of dining experiences available right in our own backyard. Whether you're looking for a special occasion destination, a satisfying breakfast spot, or a hidden local treasure, these four restaurants offer memorable experiences that are well worth exploring.

More items to note - today begins hurricane season, make sure you have your emergency supplies available and ready. Also, I have noticed mosquitos are out in force already. Be sure to empty any standing containers of water in your yard. Finally, if you have azaleas in your yard, this is the time to trim and shape them for next season's bloom.
