There’s something about May on the Gulf Coast—you can feel the shift.
The weather warms up, the calendar fills in, and suddenly weekends aren’t just “free time”… they’re opportunities. Opportunities to gather, celebrate, and reconnect with the people and places that make this community what it is.
And this month? It’s packed—in the best way possible.

Start with Celebration (and Maybe a Mint Julep)
Early May kicks off with one of the most iconic events of the season, the Kentucky Derby. Around here, that means local watch parties, themed menus, big beautiful hats and businesses bringing a little Southern tradition to life.
It’s not about the race—it’s about the experience. Getting out, dressing up a little, and sharing it with friends at places that know how to host. Local establishments are hosting gatherings to view the race. Check out The Haberdasher in downtown Mobile and The Grand Mariner Restaurant for race watching destinations. Whether you are viewing the race at home or at a local establishment, its a great excuse for wearing your favorite hat!

Festivals, Balloons & Weekends That Feel Like Summer - Hoping for NO BAD WEATHER!!!
As the month rolls on, events start popping up everywhere—including fan favorites at OWA Parks & Resort. The 21st Annual Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival alone is enough to draw families, couples, and visitors from all over. Free Admission! April 29 - May 2, 2026. Balloon flights are at dawn & dusk. Click here for more information.
This event is breathtaking and a reminder of how much is happening right here in our own backyard. You don’t have to travel far to find something worth experiencing.

Roadtrip anyone?
And if you’re feeling the pull to get out of town for a day or two, there’s no better road trip than heading west to New Orleans for the final weekend of the New Orleans Jazz Festival. This isn’t just a concert—it’s a full-on cultural experience. With legendary artists like The Eagles, Teddy Swims, Earth, Wind & Fire, Trombone Shorty, Alabama Shakes, and Herbie Hancock taking the stage, it’s the kind of lineup that turns a quick trip into a memory. Add in incredible food, local art, and that unmistakable New Orleans energy, and you’ve got a weekend that’s hard to beat—all just a drive away. Just keep an eye on the weather before heading out...the grounds turn into a muddy mess when it rains so wear the right gear!
Speaking of New Orleans, I asked my NOLA native husband to share some axioms that are heard around his hometown. Here are 5 sayings you may hear in New Orleans. I'll share more in future blogs. Hopefully these make you smile!
Makin’ groceries - to get/buy groceries
Lotta Mo - a lot more
Mo betta – much better
Zinc - sink
Mynaisse - Mayonnaise

Cinco de Mayo is Tuesday, May 5th
If there’s ever a built-in excuse to support local restaurants, this is it!
From tacos and margaritas to live music and packed patios, it’s one of those days where the energy is contagious. And every table filled, every drink ordered, every tip left—it all supports the people behind the scenes making it happen.
So Many Mother's Day Weekend Options!
Mother’s Day slows things down in the best way. It’s a chance to be intentional.
Whether it’s brunch, a meaningful gift, or an afternoon wandering through something beautiful like Bellingrath Gardens and Home, the focus shifts to appreciation.
And here’s the truth—those moments feel different when they’re done locally. More personal. Less rushed. More memorable. By the way, the Chinese Latarn display is happening in the evenings at Bellingrath through June 21, 2026. Another lovely option for you to explore!

Fancy a Weekend Getaway for Your Mom?
Treat your mom to one of the best festivals for art in the South. Artisphere in Greenville, South Carolina is a downtown street event featuring 140 artists chosen from over 1000 applicants. This May 8-10 gathering features live music, great food and of course plenty of creativity all nestled in one of the only downtowns with a waterfall park. I was fortunate to live there for several years and enjoyed this event and the beauty of the location. I am going to share a screenshot from artists SIGNE & GENNA GRUSHOVENKO on display at this year's event. Just a sample of what you can experience!
You can stay in Greenville, Greer, Mauldin, Landrum or even Asheville. There are countless beautiful small mountain towns ready to host you. In fact, one of my favorites is The Red Horse Inn in Landrum. Go check out their website by here.

Caps, Gowns & What Comes Next

May is also graduation season. A time full of pride, excitement, and big decisions.
It’s easy to focus on what’s next somewhere else—but there’s a strong case for what’s already here. Local businesses are growing, and opportunities are opening up for those ready to step into the workforce and start building something meaningful close to home. Companies like Bailey 360 Security and AlaCoast Insurance are actively hiring, offering real paths for graduates to gain experience, earn a living, and grow within businesses that are invested in this community.
That kind of opportunity matters. Because when local talent stays local, everyone benefits.
Shout out to Caden Zoltek, son of boss partners Jessica & Mike Zoltek for graduating this year! Wishing him the best of everything life has to offer!
Beach Days Are Back—And So Is the Momentum
And of course… the beach. We are so fortunate to have beach access in Alabama, Florida & Mississippi.
As temperatures rise, the Gulf Coast comes alive again. Visitors roll in, traffic picks up, and the entire local economy gets a boost.
Behind the scenes, businesses are preparing—staffing up, tightening operations, and getting ready for the surge. It’s a season that impacts everyone, whether you’re in hospitality, service, or supporting those who are.
Here is a unique option happening at Alys Beach, Florida on May 15th & 16th. Digital Graffiti artists will be displaying on the walls of the beach homes. Wow...talk about making memories. Where Immersive Technology Meets Art & Architecture.
