Staying Healthy in 2021! In the Spotlight: The Hickory Pit in Semmes, Alabama

My older sister and I are determined to stay healthy and increase our immunity in 2021. If there is one lesson that I have learned during this pandemic it is this: being the best version of yourself is the best defense. Having people like Amy Rainwaters, a Mayo Clinic Health & Wellness Coach, in my life adds support to the mission! As stated in an earlier blog, her approach is to take simple steps towards your goal every day.

Personally, I have adopted her mantra and strive to be healthier today than I was yesterday. The things that are working well for me might surprise you. I would rank getting 8 hours of sleep as the one thing that really affects how I feel. My friends over at Good Morning Mattress can share their wealth of knowledge about how rest affects everything from cognitive ability to weight loss. Having a comfortable pillow, sheets and bed really make a difference!

Another thing that Amy suggests is to do something every day that makes you happy. It could be taking your dogs for a walk, reading a chapter in a book, joining a friend for coffee or a glass of wine at Domke Market. Find what feels good and do it! Personally, I spend time outdoors daily, even if it is just a 10 minute break in the backyard. Soaking up some Vitamin D from the sun is a great contributor to my well being.

One of the top things that I have done to feel better is eliminating processed foods and unnecessary cane sugar from my meals. Like most folks, I had a well-developed sweet tooth. I used to joke that I was a "Cookie Monster" because I loved them so much. It did not help that I am a great baker and have a big repertoire of delicious recipes in my arsenal. Interestingly, after a couple of days practicing "no added sugar" everything tastes better.

By now, most of you know about my love of coffee. It began at the young age of 5 when my momma gave me coffee-milk. It was a delicious concoction of milk, sugar and a splash of coffee. Decades later, when I pour my first cup of java, I think about her.

These days, coffee is a "vehicle" to spend time with friends. It is a nice way to catch up and share life stories. Feeding your psychological health is paramount to being the best version of yourself. Carve out some time for people you care about!

On a side note, I have figured out ways to have a healthy cup of coffee. In fact, my morning brew has a scoop of collagen, some cream and a pack of Stevia! When feeling good becomes a priority your tastebuds adjust to your new lifestyle!

Finding people to mentor you to reach goals is as important in your personal life as it is in business. As an entrepreneur, I am consistently educating myself through seminars and coaching scenarios. Why not apply that same dedication to the care of my body and soul? Setting up sessions with Amy is an option, no matter where you live. Also, there are LOADS of videos about diet, exercise, sleep, life balance and any other topic you might be interested in online. Find the experts that resonate with you and dive into health! Your body will thank you!

A big shout out to Grant at Hibberts Auto Services for getting my BMW's glove box open. I had this nightmare image of getting pulled over and not being able to show the officer my registration & insurance papers.

My little convertible is a gem of a car, however; she does pose some interesting challenges at times. Fortunately, Grant is a Master BMW mechanic and has seen it all!

Last week, I was at The Wharf and of course I stopped in A Coastal Zen to see Stan & Mary Kay Chapman. The shop was buzzing with spring breakers & cheerleaders in town for the week!

I came home with some new additions to my stack of bracelets. Wearing jewelry that has a purpose is so healing for me. Here is what I am modeling!

  • Hematite - grounding, earth support

  • Black Tourmaline - protection, absorbs negative energy

  • Sodalite - deep insight

  • Garnet - healing

  • Tiger Eye- purposeful action

  • Red Jasper - balance, protection & grounding

Have fun building your own stack!

Last week I experienced a lesson in always remaining flexible! I had family planning to visit for a few days however some health issues prevented this from happening. So the best laid plans and some yummy menus had to be put on hold. Sunday morning I headed to Crestview, Florida to meet them "half-way" for lunch and a visit. It was wonderful to see my beloved brother-in-law for the first time since he was seriously electrocuted last summer. Yes, the visit was too short but it was incredible to see how well he has recovered from a deadly hit. My disappointment quickly turned to gratitude.

The lesson is to be in the now and enjoy what surrounds you today! Have a great week! ~ Charlsie
