The Holiday Countdown in Mobile & Baton Rouge!

Cookies cooling on a rack.
Marion Cookies

If you spend a few minutes on social media or get out in public you will find people experiencing different emotions during the holidays. Children are on their best behavior because "Santa" is watching. Parents are busy with working, shopping and driving the kids to various parties. Some enjoy the hustle and bustle while others are stressed.

Some folks are facing Christmas without a loved one. Our parents are no longer living so we look for ways to honor them every year.

One thing that my husband and I do is bake cookies. We use his mother's recipe aptly named "Marion Cookies". I roll them out with an antique wooden rolling pin that belonged to my mom. Our kitchen feels crowded with "love" because we know the mothers are watching and enjoying being a part of our tradition.

My mother adored Christmas time and always made certain that it was a memorable occasion for me. I remember standing on a stool helping her roll out cookies and decorate them for friends and family. She made incredible divinity and other holiday delights. Our home smelled glorious and I know my dad packed on a few extra pounds every year! I saw him relax and really enjoy life during the holidays. He was a hard working entrepreneur with numerous employees depending on his efforts for their income. It could be very draining on him at times.

Instead of getting caught up in the self-imposed burdens of the season, why not find the joy? Uncover a way to commemorate your loved ones. Spend time with the people who love you. Call an old friend. Visit a lonely neighbor. Get outside in nature and soak in the fresh air.

Cherish the reason for the season...it is all about love for one another.
