Mardi Gras Season has begun on the Gulf Coast! Things to do, YouTube, Locals in the News & More!

This year we will experience a shorter than usual Mardi Gras season on the Gulf Coast. It began on January 6th and will end on Fat Tuesday, February 13th. Mobile's Mardi Gras is reputed to be more family friendly than our neighbors in New Orleans. As you can see from the image below, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the festivities!

It is going to be an extremely busy February with Valentine's Day falling the day after the season ends. That can be very challenging time for local businesses including florists, hotels and restaurants. Please be kind to your fellow business owners during this bustling period of the year!

Check out this very extensive calendar from our friends at The Mobile Rundown!

Celebrations are in full swing beginning in February, across the bay, in Fairhope, Alabama. Here's a schedule of parades for you to enjoy. The Mystic Mutts of Revelry is a fun family experience in lovely downtown Fairhope!

I had to include a picture of a post I came across on social media this week. Those of us residing in Mobile will get a kick out of this pillow from Pop's Midtown. I imagine it will be a sought after item for the 2024 season! Check out the store at 2103 Airport Blvd. in Mid-City.

Enjoy all of the pageantry that surrounds Mardi Gras this year. I hope you catch loads of beads and perhaps a pillow or two!

LODA Artwalk tonight, January 12th 6-9PM

Mystery Pop-up at Redbar Espresso & Market this Saturday!

Inclement weather won't affect this new event at RedBar Espresso this weekend!

You'll find plenty of indoor seating at this wonderful space.

The City of Mobile Parks & Recreation is presenting a Mystery Pop-Up hosted at RedBar Espresso & Market, located on Old Shell Road in West Mobile. If you've never been to Redbar, this is a great excuse to check out this local gem! Trivia buffs, this one is for you!

New on YouTube this Week!

First of all, thank you to everyone who has subscribed to my cooking channel (click here to check it out). It is so much fun to share family recipes and new finds! Here's what I've been creating this week!

This delicious Green Split Pea Soup video will come out on Sunday the 14th, so stay tuned for this family favorite. Serve it for a healthy, light lunch and pair it with French bread or a salad. Click here for this "soup for your soul" and your tummy!

I had a big container of Baby Bella mushrooms that added a delicious level of flavor to this easy to make quiche. It is loaded with vegetables including the mushrooms, broccoli and onions. I added some leftover holiday ham and my favorite cheddar cheese to create this tasty lunch or dinner entree. Click here to watch the video for Broccoli, Mushroom, Ham & Cheese Quiche.

Are you wanting a healthy, vegan version of quiche? This CRUSTLESS Spinach, Mushroom & Cheese Quiche is a low-carb, gluten free option for you. It is wonderful to serve for lunch or brunch. Click here to watch and let me know what you think! (By the way, I am out of mushrooms).

Coming soon to the channel...French Onion Soup & Oatmeal Cookies!

Dementia Support Group

A neighbor of mine has a spouse who has the early signs of Dementia. I came across this FREE class for support givers and wanted to share it with you. This important educational group is brought to you by Touching Hearts Senior Care, founded by Gina Germany. Her tireless work in this area of concern is admirable and our community is fortunate to have her. Please feel free to share this information with anyone that you know who is the caregiver of someone with Dementia.

Financial Tips from Richard Lindsey

This week, Richard Lindsey shared some great tips for setting financial goals for 2024, especially during these uncertain economic times.

  • First, if you don't have goals, then you should!

  • Second, keep them attainable and practical.

Pick measurable goals:

  • Build an emergency fund of $1000 by April

  • Make an extra car payment

  • Reduce the number of times you eat out and begin meal prepping. (Your health will thank you).

  • Find ways to increase your income by 10%

Keeping your financial resolutions feasible will pave the road to success. You will be part of the 8% of the US population that actually keeps their commitments for 2024!

Need an experienced certified public accountant, Lindsey & Waldo are accepting new clients. Call the office at 251-633-4070 to schedule a consultation.

What I am Reading this Week?

I typically start the new year with a pile of books that I want to read. 2024 is no different and I wanted to share two that I am really enjoying. The first is Conversations with God, Book Two. It is the second in a trilogy written by best selling author, Neale Donald Walsch. Have you ever thought about fasting? Dr. Mindy Pelz's Fast Like a Girl is packed with practical information for female focused health! I highly recommend both of them! Both are available online from Amazon or at your local library.

Mushroom Coffee???

Anyone that spends any time around my home will quickly ascertain that I LOVE coffee. In an effort to add some nutritional merit to my favorite morning beverage, I ordered mushroom organic coffee. This one has Lion's Mane and Chaga mushrooms and is roasted by Four Sigmatic.

I must admit, that I cautiously sipped my first cup, awaiting an unknown flavor profile. I tried it black, then added in a little heavy cream and stevia.

Drumroll please...it is fantastic. I do feel energized without the caffeine jitters. This one is a regular caffeine blend, however the company offers lower and decaf versions. So if you have been on the fence about trying the mushroom blends, go for it!

You create both the good things and the hope yourself, so don't expect anything, do it yourself, create it yourself, don't wait!

Have a great week! ~ Charlsie
