My neighbor and I take daily walks around our neighborhood every evening. Lately we've been dodging major thunder (and lightening) storms plaguing our area along the Gulf Coast. Our yards are soaking up the moisture and my plants are loving it!
Did you know that humans love the smell of rain, a delicious medley of aromas known collectively as “petrichor?” But where does that smell come from? According to an email I got from Interesting Facts, when rain hits porous soil and rocks after a long dry spell, small bacteria called actinobacteria (primarily Streptomyces species) release earthy-smelling organic compounds known as geosmin (a type of alcohol) into the air and into our nostrils. Plants also secrete oils during dry spells that then release odors when it rains. Human noses are highly sensitive to this mixture of smells and can sniff it out better than a shark can smell blood in the sea.
So when someone says they can smell rain, they aren't kidding!
Did you know that Daphne, Alabama ranks #1 for the most annual rainfall in Alabama averaging 67.7 inches? It is tied with Spanish Fort and Fairhope for this honor. Mobile ranks 12th in the state with 66.3 inches per year on average. Grab your umbrellas, y'all...we get more rain here than Seattle, Washington!
